The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Club kicked off the Holiday Season by hosting a Scholastic Book Fair and conducting their annual Shoe Box Project. The proceeds from the book fair and the items collected in the project’s drive were used to create gift boxes for the residents at the Next Step Shelter in Kakaʻako.

In addition to a two day book fair on campus, the ECE Club also hosted a two week virtual book fair via the Scholastic’s website and book fair app. The proceeds from the book fairs were used to purchase more than $350 worth of books, making it possible for each child at Next Step to receive two books.

Every year the Shoe Box Project collects toiletries, non-expired/non-perishable baby food/healthy snacks, school supplies, and toys to create “shoe box” gifts for shelter residents. The club kicked off their drive in Early November by setting up five collection stations around campus. After the end of the project ECE Club and the Hawaiian Center, their partner on this year’s project, were able to make more than 60 boxes for children and close to 40 boxes for the adult residents at the shelter.
