Honolulu Community College Writing Center is now certified as a master tutor trainer by the College Learning and Reading Association’s (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program!
The College Reading and Learning Association’s International Tutor Training Program provides the CRLA certification. What this means is that the Honolulu Community College Writing Center’s writing coach training meets standards established internationally. Meriting the certification is not a simple process, and it is rare that the CRLA committee certifies a writing center on its first submission. In your HonCC’s Writing Center’s case, it was certified upon first submission. The certification required Jenny Lundahl, and Writing Center Director Conred Maddox to show that the writing center training covers multiple topics and strategies (learning styles, modeling writing skills, training the writers to come with questions, developing rapport, etc.). They went through the application process diligently and reviewed it several times to ensure that their approach to preparing writing coaches to work with students meets the highest standards. This certification is proof that the HonCC Writing Center coaches are capable and effective when working with you, our students.
It is the Writing Center’s hope that this latest effort to improve will add to your confidence and compel you to book appointments and meet with writing coaches to improve your writing work.
Mahalo to Melissa Tupa and the Hawaiian Center for financing the certification (we are certified to train the Hawaiian Center’s coaches) and Jolene Suda and Pua Reis of TRIO-SSS for providing examples from their CRLA certification.
The HonCC Writing Center looks forward to continuing to offer CRLA certified writing coaches to help our students succeed!
