State lawmakers are moving forward this year with a bill that would ban smoking at all University of Hawaii campuses.

If passed, the bill would prohibit smoking and tobacco use by any person on any campus. That would include electronic cigarettes, too.

The bill has already been passed by one House committee and is moving forward. It notes that more than 700 universities and colleges across the United States already have bans on tobacco use, and many colleges are also moving to include electronic smoking devices in their bans.

A number of anti-smoking groups, including the Coalition for a Tobacco-free Hawaii and the American Lung Association, have already testified in favor of the complete ban.
