In line with the 2012-2013 Honors Study Topic, “The Culture of Competition,” our Honors in Action Project focused on the how competition and cooperation affect the use of our islands’ limited resources to produce kalo.  Our Phi Theta Kappa students and advisors extend a big mahalo to Hawaiian Studies faculty (Kumu Alapaki Luke, Tiani Akeo-Basques and Faith Kahale Saito).  They took time out of their busy schedules to be the keynote speakers at our two PTK seminars where we learned the story of Haloa, the Hawaiian values of ho’okuku (competitiveness) and laulima (cooperation), the issues related to land use, access to water, sustainability of our islands’ resources, and the preservation of the cultivation of kalo.

Mahalo to our HonoluluCC faculty and staff who have helped us on this year’s journey to excellence.  The students worked hard this year and with your support and encouragement, they have been able to achieve the goals that they set for themselves over several planning meetings held throughout the summer of 2013.  I believe that their participation in Phi Theta Kappa will help these students to go on to achieve great things in their personal and professional lives.  Please join me in congratulating our Phi Theta Kappa students on receiving these Phi Theta Kappa Pacific Region Awards!
