Each semester there are students who don’t have enough money to buy their textbooks or can only buy them after their classes have started.  It’s frustrating for them and us because it affects the quality of their education and jeopardizes their academic success.

What started as an idea with an Essentials English faculty member flourished into the establishment of the Honolulu Community College OpportunityAssistance Fund.  Our language arts colleagues have raised $1,000 through their personal contributions and with matching dollars from the college’s enrichment account the fund is off to a good start.

This assistance with book purchases will help students with the greatest financial need and most lacking in college readiness skills be prepared for their first day of classes this fall. With texts costing about $50 each, our goal is to raise $10,000 by August.

This summer, would you consider making a gift of $25, $50, or $75, to help our students in financial need to buy textbooks before the first day of classes?

If you can contribute a gift of any size by July 15, you’ll not only have our gratitude and that of our students, but you’ll help inspire our surrounding community of neighbors and businesses to pitch in as well.

You already do so much for our students and I’m asking for your continued support so we can encourage our friends and neighbors to join us in making a difference in our students’ lives.

Mahalo nui loa for all you do and for considering this request.
